Rockaway YouthMarket 2015 Season
ROCKAWAY YOUTH TASK FORCE LAUNCHES YOUTH MARKET FOR 2015 SEASON, PROVIDING AFFORDABLE FRESH FOOD ACCESS TO LOCAL RESIDENTS
For the third year, the Rockaway Youth Task Force, in partnership with the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation, the New York Community Trust and GrowNYC, will bring affordable, farm fresh produce at our Rockaway Youth Market. The market runs for 20 weeks between July 11th and November 21st from 9:30 am – 4 pm, rain or shine. The market will be located at 310 Beach 58th Street in the RYTF Community Garden off of Beach Channel Drive.
The youth-run farm stand will accept cash, SNAP/EBT, debit/credit, WIC and FMNP checks so residents can purchase seasonally available fruits and vegetables. Services for subsided food programs in this community are crucial in order to help serve low-income residents in the area.
In addition to farm-fresh produce, shoppers will also be able to attend weekly, on-site cooking demonstrations, which will feature produce being sold that market day. Shoppers will be able to learn how to cook available produce into hot and cold dishes, which will include various salads with ingredients like golden beets and kale, to sautés including sweet corn and Swiss chard.
Produce comes from local farms across New York and surrounding states. Local youth are able to gain employment working weekly to operate the market from opening to closing. Customers using SNAP/EBT will also receive two dollars in Health Bucks for every five dollars they spend. The Department of Mental Health and Hygiene provides health bucks to give shoppers using EBT/SNAP an additional 40% on the dollar for their purchases between July and September. Citizens Committee for New York provided funding for this initiative.
The market is accessible by Q22 via Beach 59th Street and by the “A” train via Beach 60th Street.
