Rockaway Youth Task Force Crab Boil Success
On Saturday, September 9th, the Rockaway Youth Task Force invited the community to celebrate a fantastic growing season at their Annual Farm Dinner Fundraiser. This year’s Crab Boil was a success and more than 100 people attended the event. RYTF’s Director of Organizing Laura Jurewicz praised the community’s turnout. “The Urban Farm & Community Garden is a huge part of this community and we are honored by this show of support. There was so much love and laughter on Saturday. This is what community is all about.”
RYTF’s Annual Farm Dinner Fundraiser serves to connect the community with RYTF’s youth organizers and allows the organization to showcase their advocacy and food justice work. Taking place at the RYTF Urban Farm & Community Garden, the meal featured produce from the garden as well as other locally-sourced goods, including blue crab, a Hudson Valley and NYC area favorite. Caterer Nicole Russell, owner of Last Dragon Pizza, was instrumental in making the evening a success. The delicious meal was a perfect companion to the evening’s good vibes and summery weather.
Over the course of the evening, guests were invited to take a tour of the farm and learn more about the organization from RYTF youth, including Lead Organizer Malachi Davidson. “As young people, we don’t get to share our story a lot. People either think we’re too young or we’re not experienced enough, but RYTF and the Fundraiser Dinner gives youth the chance to talk with other community members about things that they’re passionate about. This dinner gave me a chance to meet new people and share my passion for food justice and youth issues with my neighbors.”
