Participatory Budgeting Week in Far Rockaway

This week is the week to cast your vote for Participatory Budgeting, a program in which communities vote on how one million dollars is spent in your council district. Normally the Rockaway Peninsula would participate in two sets of voting, both district 31 (Far Rockaway) and 32 (Rockaway Beach), but Councilman Eric Ulrich decided not to participate in the program this year.

Voting in district 31 affects communities in Arverne, Far Rockaway, Brookville, Laurelton, Rosedale and Springfield Gardens.

The ballot items and budgets for the local area include: P.S. 42 Auditorium Sound, Stage and Risers upgrade ($250,000), Street planting in Far Rockaway along Seagirt Boulvard ($150,000), Creation of a new picnic grove and BBQ area in O’Donohue Park near Seagirt Boulevard and Beach 16th Street ($320,000), Smart Board upgrades for the schools at 10-45 Nameoke Street ($150,000), Smart Boards and iPads for students at 338 Beach 56th Street ($80,000), Lenovo laptops and laptop carts for learning at P.S. 104 ($150,000), Goldie Maple Academy Library Upgrades ($450,000), Library Tech Upgrade at P.S. 43, including seven new desktops, laptops and laptop cart, printers and smart boards ($250,000), Technology upgrades at Goldie Maple Academy, including WiFi upgrades, 50 Mac laptops, six  LCD projectors, 18 mounted smart boards and three scanner systems ($200,000), and P.S. 106 Drinking Water Fountain Upgrades and installation ($225,000).

Voting continues until Friday, April 13th at 5pm. Participants can cast their votes at various locations, including Councilman Richards’ office at 1931 Mott Avenue, Rock Safe Streets and local schools, and libraries during opening hours.

Councilman Richards will be holding a press conference today  at P.S. 104 (26-01 Mott Ave) at 6 p.m. explaining the ballot process and items.
